Why Don't These Schools Have Football? (Gonzaga, Creighton, Long Beach State)
One of the more fun parts of March Madness is the fact that it brings together universities from all over division 1 athletics to compete in the same national title tournament, from FBS, FCS, and schools without football. From these schools without football, three have earned a special spotlight from last year's tournament: the Gonzaga Bulldogs and Creighton Bluejays, tournament regulars, and Long Beach State.
These schools have done fine for themselves without football, but every once and a while, seeing these teams compete against schools that do feature football on campus, the question gets raised: why don't they have football? Where did those teams go? Why did they get cut?
Today, I look into answering that exact question. Why don't Gonzaga, Creighton, and Long Beach State have football? The answer is surprisingly simple, but some interesting stories are brought up along the way.

Why Doesn't the NCAA Have Any Dinosaur Schools? (ft. @empire1800)

When looking into pop culture, you don't have to go very far before you find some sort of reference to dinosaurs. Sometimes massive, sometimes terrifying, these ancient reptiles have become cornerstones in the culture of North America and the world as a whole, especially following the release of Jurassic Park, one of the most popular franchises in cinema today. So with a chokehold like that on ...

What if Nick Saban Stayed in Miami?

Every college and pro football fan knows about the short two-year hiatus Nick Saban took as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins before he moved on to kickstarting one of the most dominant college dynasties in history with the Alabama Crimson Tide. Some say he just wasn't cut out for the rigors of the pro game, while others note the stories surrounding Drew Brees' injury and the odd signing fia...
The WORST 2024 NFL Mock Draft

The Most Tragic Coach in College Football

With the recent retirement of Nick Saban at Alabama, many conversations have arisen about who the greatest coach in college football is now that he's gone. He was one of the sports' most prolific schemers and program builders, and easily earns his crown as the best of the modern era. But lost in translation are the coaches who never won national championships that did jobs as impressive-if not ...
What If Texas Joined the SEC Early?

With Texas' addition to the SEC this year, it's easy to wonder what college sports could have been like if they'd always been there. And while the Longhorns were a pioneer for the Southwest Conference and had some levels of success in the Big 12 Conference, especially early, there are some questions that arise about what would have changed in the world had they joined in the 1990s. Oddly enough...

The History of the WAC

Of all the conferences torn apart by conference realignment that have seemingly been lost to time, the Western Athletic Conference, or WAC, tends to be listed near the front. This might be due to the fact that the conference is trying to reinvent itself as an FCS football league at the moment, or due to its infamous blunder in 1996 where it was made up of 16 colleges that stretched from Texas t...

I'm from the Washington DC area and George Washington University, although it's a private university, is the largest college in the city. The Colonials (Now know as the Revolutionaries) had a Football program, only briefly stopping for WWII, from 1881 to 1966. During that span they played against six current teams in Division 1 most notably, Maryland, Virginia and Virginia Tech which were a part of the conference that spawn the Southeastern Conference and the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Southern Conference. The only Colleges that currently play Football in the city are Howard University and Georgetown in the FCS, and Catholic University in Division 3.

Football is in a little bit of trouble because of the risk of concussions and it’s not necessarily football‘s fault. When I was a kid in the 70s, we played tackle football with no padding and almost nobody got hurt because like rugby players no, you learn to keep your head out of the way after that first your head as a kid. additionally over the last 20 years of the advent of cell phones, social media, video games, and helicopter parents who are afraid to let their children out of the house, children do not play outside and climb trees, and ‘ do dangerous things in a safe manner’ which allows them to build strength, especially core strength, and physical and mental resilience. As a lacrosse coach, I realize that it wasn’t the hits or the contacts that caused most concussions, but when somebody was knocked off balance, and they hit their head. That was mainly due to the fact that even though these kids played sports since they were kids they still didn’t have the course strength necessary to keep their balance in the first place and also where they are in space safe. There’s also a reason that in my experience playing against Canadian teams, they’re not only usually better than American teams at least in lacrosse, but they also play rough because they have national healthcare and they’re not worried about their kids getting hurt because they know that they’ll get treatment instead of their family going bankrupt. This is another reason why football is declined because we don’t have national healthcare and many families cannot afford to have their child hurt . I also work as a teacher and I’ve seen the negative effects of trying to keep children safe on the playground. And an effort to keep children safe we have taken all the equipment off the playground that allows them to try dangerous things at their ability safely. Like all things in life we need to practice to make progress and improve and that means starting at 34 and five years old doing dangerous things safely, roughhousing, playing tag, however, sadly, we have taken this all away from children and wonder why they are still getting hurt hurt. We also wonder why this is a generation of depression and anxiety. Go find the book the anxious generation. I would love to see all of these things in our society resolved so that sports like football could start growing again and possibly even expand college football ; and moreover, that football coaches would more readily except Lacrosse as a way to develop their football players to make them stronger, more flexible, and develop the skills to avoid injury, but sadly many football coaches at least here in the Northwest USA are indifferent to outwardly hostile to their football players playing lacrosse.

BYU-I (at the time Ricks College) once had a football team until 2001. It's interesting because it wasn't a money issue, quite the opposite given the LDS Church is massively wealthy. Even 23 years later, the football stadium on campus is kept up to date despite now only rec league football being played

Fun fact- the absolutely jacked fella in the Long Beach segment, Leon Burns, broke multiple NCAA rushing records at LB due to being 5-10 years older than everyone he played, having served a prison sentence right after high school. He remains the oldest first round pick in NFL history, entering the league at 29 years old.

Being from Ohio originally and specifically from the Dayton area, I’d like to know why Wright State University doesn’t have a football team. As for the Pacific-12 collapsing, that is exactly why I am done with college sports. I do not like this new landscape at all. I wanted the Big 12 to completely die out because it was on the verge of collapse and they are as good as gone. This sucks too because I used to enjoy college football and college basketball. In fact, I used to like college sports more than professional. My team used to be Ohio State. Now, all they care about is money which is why UCLA and USC decided to join the Big Ten and that was the final straw for me. They don’t even care about any of us who want to watch the games, they don’t care about geography, and they don’t even care about the history, traditions, or even rivalries. I wonder how long that’s gonna last before they lose fans and money and even athletes

Thanks for doing a segment on Long Beach St, and not mentioning the shark. :P Also, thanks for mentioning Terrell Davis, who played his Freshman Year at The Beach under Willie Brown, and redshirted for George Allen, who recruited him. One correction... LB joined the CCAA in FB in 1958, not the Big West, which didn't exist yet. LB was one of the 7 schools that formed the Big West, then called the PCAA, Pacific Coast Athletic Association, on July 1, 1969, for the 1969 football season. They should have had a second bowl game for winning the 1980 conference title, but the PCAA had no bowl affiliation that year. The California Bowl in Fresno would be created in 1981. UNDEFEATED SINCE 1991! LOL

Particularly as a fan of a school who hasn't had football since 1950 (High Point), I do worry that non-football schools are getting screwed over by realignment if even Gonzaga is seen as an afterthought. This thinking is also ruining college basketball in general as well.

I love the what if type questions so here's one I mentioned in another comment. What if DePaul had football and Creighton and St. Louis kept their teams into the 60s and 70s? We could have had a Midwestern based league consisting of DePaul, Creighton, Marquette, St. Louis, Wichita State, Detroit Mercy, Xavier, Dayton, and Butler that would have been a VERY solid basketball league and played something at least resembling a current MAC/Sun Belt type of football conference. Instead, 7 of the 9 no longer have football teams at all, and the 2 that do (Butler and Dayton) have low budget non scholarship teams that would be at the D3 level if the NCAA let them play down there.
